Brazilian MP Isabella de Roldao visited London housing association RHP this month to see examples of best practice in the UK social housing sector.
Ms de Roldao is MP for the Partido Democratico Trabalhista (the Brazilian Labour and Democracy Party) in the municipality of Recife – the fifth largest metropolitan area in Brazil. She is developing a number of social initiatives in Recife and is keen to learn from the experiences of other countries.
Ms de Roldao says: “I was particularly interested to learn more about the combination of quality housing and social support that RHP provides to their customers and local people, so I can take back some ideas to Recife.
I was really impressed with what I saw – both at RHP’s office and out on their estates in Richmond. I couldn’t see any difference between RHP homes and private properties and the standard of customer care was fantastic.”
Brazil currently has a basic social housing structure funded by central Government; however Ms de Roldao is interested in how a more local approach could work. RHP’s customer base is focussed in Richmond, Hounslow and Kingston – a relatively small geographical area which ensures a high quality local management service.
Close connections to the local areas also mean that a high percentage of customers and local people are employed at RHP, meaning they know the area well and can make informed decisions about local services.
