A young housing apprentice is taking to Twitter tomorrow (Tuesday 14 January) to give others the chance to spend a day in her shoes.

17-year-old Shannon Coy will tweet her working day on the social networking site to help raise awareness of what it is like to be an apprentice in the housing sector. You can follow her story at @FIH_GM

Shannon from Dukinfield in Tameside joined New Charter Housing Trust Group on a two-year apprenticeship in September last year and since then she has been working her way around the company to learn about different areas of the business.

Shannon has just started a four-month placement with New Charter’s Connect contact centre as part of her apprenticeship where she will help tenants with a range of housing queries and repairs over the phone.

Shannon will tweet from 9am during one of her training days which will see her going out and about with engineers to get hands-on experience in dealing with repairs from boiler faults to damp and condensation in homes.

Shannon left college after her As-levels and is now studying for an NVQ Level 2 in Housing as part of her apprenticeship. She said: “I decided not to carry on at college and look at an apprenticeship because I wanted more independence and the chance to get into the world of work.

“I chose housing because it seems like a really rewarding job where I can work my way up the career ladder while building my confidence.

“Working in housing is really varied and by telling people all about what I do on Twitter, it might encourage more teenagers to look at an apprenticeship as a start to a great career.”

Shannon is one of around 130 people in the North West to start an apprenticeship with a housing provider this year as part of a new project called Foundations in Housing.

Foundations in Housing, which started in April 2013, is a partnership between the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) and the housing sector to create more apprenticeships for people aged 16+.

It is funded by the Government’s Employer Ownership of Skills pilot - a competitive fund open to employers to invest in training and development to drive enterprise and economic growth.

Led by New Charter Housing Trust Group, Foundations in Housing is the first project of its kind in the UK to work with colleges and training providers to offer tailored apprenticeships in housing.

Jane Blackburn, New Charter’s Director of Organisational Transformation said: “This year we’ve been able to double the number of apprentices as a result of the Foundations in Housing and we really want more housing providers to join the project to give more young people better opportunities.

“Shannon’s day on Twitter will give people a window into the world of an apprentice and we’d love for as many people as possible to get on board by following and sharing Shannon’s tweets.”

Join Shannon on Twitter from 9am tomorrow @FIH_GM
