A Manchester social housing tenant has been recognised on the 2014 New Year Honours list.
Gloria Barnwell, a resident of housing association Eastlands Homes, has been recognised for services to her community of Gorton, including setting up the first residents association in 1976, securing funding for Gorton Park and acting as the chair of the Friends of Gorton Park for over 10 years.
Gloria said: “I was so shocked to receive the MBE but I am absolutely delighted.”
Working with Eastlands Homes on a range of initiatives, Gloria has most recently gave up her time as a literacy champion helping local people to read and write.
Gloria added: “I’ve never stopped studying, always eager to learn. When I heard about the literacy project I was keen to get involved. It’s my chance to help other people to learn.”
Eastland Home's chief executive, Sheila Doran, said: “We are extremely proud of Gloria and all she has achieved for Gorton. Gloria truly is making it a better place for people to live.”
