Salford building contractor City West Works is continuing to reduce its carbon footprint by adding two brand new electric cars to its fleet of 105 vehicles.

The cars, which will be used by staff making visits to City West Housing Trust’s 14,600 properties, will each reduce CO2 emissions by almost two tonnes a year compared to a standard diesel or petrol vehicle.

The move is just one of several initiatives that City West Works is leading on to improve its green credentials and manage the impact it has on the environment.

The organisation has fitted its vehicles with a device to support more economic driving, alerting drivers of any habits that increase fuel consumption, including hard cornering, acceleration, braking and lengthy vehicle idling.

Latest figures released by supplier Masternaut show that, since April, the devices have helped City West Works to reduce CO2 emissions by 23.5 tonnes, translating to a cost saving of £11,530.

The contractor also recently achieved a prestigious Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 2030 accreditation following an assessment by the NICEIC – the leading regulatory body in the UK electrical contracting industry.

As a result, City West Works has now been added to a nationwide list of approved contractors that are able to carry out energy saving improvements, specifically the installation of internal and external wall insulation. It is also working towards adding underfloor insulation to its certification in the near future.

In addition, City West Works is accredited under the ISO 14001 environmental management system and by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme to install solar PV panels.

Barry Brussels, Managing Director of City West Works, said: "At City West Works, we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously. It’s important to us that we deliver affordable and sustainable solutions to our customers, but just as important is our own environmental performance.

“I’m very pleased with our achievements so far and I look forward to seeing further environmental improvements being made as we continue to deliver a first-class service to our customers.”
