The chair of a north east housing association has been awarded the MBE in the New Year's honours list.

Jackie Axelby, chair of Isos Housing's board since 2011, was nominated in recognition of her achievements in helping those with learning disabilities and her voluntary work in the education and training sector.

Since retiring in 2003, after a 30-year career as a senior manager and chief executive in the NHS, Mrs Axelby has devoted herself to a variety of board and voluntary roles in the north east.

She has served as chair of the Northumberland Learning and Skills Council, as a non-executive director of the Regional LSC Council and as a member of Durham University Council.

Additionally, she was chair of the National Training Awards North-East judging panel, and was a non-executive director of Azure Charitable Enterprises, before stepping down from both roles in 2012.

Mrs Axelby is currently a member of the Academy Trust of Whickham School and Sports College.

She said: "I was thrilled to learn I had been awarded the MBE for services to people with learning disabilities and for my activities in education and training.

“Hearing about the award came as a real surprise and I feel very privileged to have been singled out for recognition."

She has retained her links with the NHS, acting as a quality assurance lay reviewer for medical and dental education, and is vice-chair of the Dental Directorate Board.

Keith Loraine, Isos chief executive, said: “On behalf of everyone at Isos, I want to congratulate Jackie on this fantastic honour. She is tremendously hard working, and really deserves this award to recognise her devotion to public service.”
