The DIY SOS volunteers' achievements are celebrated
AmicusHorizon’s DIY SOS volunteers have given the Hastings & Bexhill Mencap Society building a fantastic makeover.
The dedicated team of 14 spent five weeks brightening up the St Leonards on Sea venue which supports local people with learning disabilities.
Their work included painting all the walls and ceilings in the community hall, decorating the kitchen area and removing and replacing dado rails.
A celebratory lunch with Mencap members was held on Tuesday 17 December to mark the volunteers’ achievements.
They were presented with certificates of achievement, home decorating kits and vouchers to use at Brewers Decorating Store.
AmicusHorizon’s DIY SOS programme, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, offers a group of unemployed and low waged volunteers the opportunity to learn DIY and decorating skills and techniques over a five week course.
A week of taster sessions were held beforehand that included wallpapering and flooring techniques.
Pauline Fletcher, CEO of the Hastings & Bexhill Mencap Society, was delighted with the results of the work.
She said: "I think the standard of work has been really high and very professional. They’ve all worked extremely hard. Having a celebration at the end means we get the chance to meet and say thank you to everyone."
Since it started in January 2012, the programme has also supported participants to qualify for their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card.
DIY SOS participant Stuart Bowers, who gained his CSCS card, said: "The course was excellent and I learnt so much!"
Further DIY SOS courses are expected to take place in 2014 in Hastings, Winchelsea, Eastbourne and St Leonards.
