WITH news just out that more and more people are being forced to turn to the Government for housing benefit to keep a roof over their heads; Peterborough’s largest landlord shows that shared ownership is one of the answers to combat this.
Cross Keys Homes is celebrating its 200th shared ownership completion after a young Peterborough lad made his dream a reality just before Christmas.
Christopher Long (23) moved into a brand new two-bedroom house on the prestigious environmental showcase site known as Vista in the city centre.
Having lived with his parents and in full time employment he still had no real hope of buying a property on the open market. But after finding out about shared ownership by Cross Keys Homes, Christopher decided the answer was to buy his home in stages.
Shared ownership is a part-buy, part-rent scheme which enables buyers to purchase a share of a property and only pay rent for the remaining share. As and when affordable, shared owners can purchase further shares until they own their home outright.
Christopher said: “Shared ownership appealed to me financially because of its affordability and cheaper cost of living.
“To buy outright just didn’t fit with my income; by doing shared ownership it helped me get my foot onto the housing ladder and into a brand new home.”
Cross Keys Homes’ Sales and Marketing Manager, Hayley Roan, added: “This is a brilliant achievement for us showing that our shared ownership model really does work.
“We are really happy to have helped Christopher find an affordable home of his own and help move him in just before Christmas.”
Hayley added: “Our 200th completion is a real milestone and we look forward to helping many more people into affordable home ownership.”
Following the national report (Home Truths 2013/14) published by the National Housing Federation which revealed that rising private rents in growth areas are forcing 310 people everyday to turn to housing benefit; Cross Keys Homes is calling for land to be released to help build more shared ownership and other affordable homes to help tackle this crisis.
