Staff at a high-rise housing estate in Walsall are staying one step ahead of the wintry weather after a snow clearing machine they ordered in the height of summer has just arrived.

Committee members of Chuckery Tenant Management Organisation (TMO) ordered the shiny red snow blower in August and are now taking it on a test drive around the estate.

As weather experts forecast the worst winter in decades, staff hope the machine will keep footpaths clear and prevent their residents and colleagues from slipping.

Chuckery TMO – part of Watmos Community Homes – is managed by the tenants who live in its 350 flats and its 14 committee members were unanimous in their decision to go for the diesel-powered snow blower.

Chair of Chuckery TMO Ian Wrighton said it had been exhausting for the caretaker and helpers to clear heavy snow earlier in the year and this winter they wanted to be prepared.

“Our estate is one of the highest points in central Walsall and very exposed to the elements so we wanted to make sure we wouldn’t be caught out this winter,” he said.

“The tenants haven’t seen it yet but I’m sure the machine will help keep them safe as they walk around the estate this winter.

“And of course we want to make sure paths are kept clear on Christmas Eve so Father Christmas can safely make his deliveries to our younger residents!”

Chuckery TMO is one of eight estates in Walsall which formed Watmos Community Homes - theUK’s first tenant-led housing association - after 1,750 homes were transferred to Watmos from Walsall Council in 2003.

Since then Watmos has transformed areas once blighted by crime and drugs into desirable places to live and now owns 2,700 properties acrossWalsalland Lambeth with hundreds of people waiting to move into its homes.
