Local children discover their green fingers

As part of a special project by leading housing and care provider Sanctuary Group, local children discovered their green fingers whilst taking part in a community landscaping day in Market Drayton.

Earlier this year, the tenants of Sanctuary’s affordable housing scheme, Sandford Court, were consulted on how best to utilise a piece of land on the communal car park. Tenants agreed that some garden improvements, including a raised bed and a bird table would be an ideal way to make use of the space.

The landscaping day involved Sandford Court tenants and children assisting in the planting of the raised bed and installation of the bird table. The children had lots of fun finding worms as they dug away with the brightly coloured spades they received as a special memento of the day.

As part of its £750 million development programme, Sanctuary is working with contractors to support neighbourhoods where developments are taking place. Developers commit to supporting local community projects near to the sites where they are working and, to date, initiatives have ranged from DIY taster sessions to improvements to a charity shop.

The landscaping day is the latest community project where the equivalent of £500 has been donated in the way of materials and the use of skills, labour and equipment by contractor Day’s New Homes Ltd.

Sophie Atkinson, Sanctuary’s Group Head of Community Investment and Sustainability said: “Sanctuary is committed to working with and doing more for local communities. The landscaping day at Sandford Court was a great opportunity for local tenants to come together to make improvements to their neighbourhood, the benefits of which will be enjoyed in years to come.”
