Local social housing provider Aragon Housing Association has teamed up with World Champion and Olympic silver medallist Kriss Akabusi MBE and Construction Gateway to offer young tenants a chance to gain qualifications with a chance of getting an apprenticeship.
Project Mackenzie, which was named after a Sergeant Major from Akabusi’s days in the Army, will see young Aragon tenants learning about construction while at the same time, gaining valuable motivation and help to enhance their employment skills.
Bob Hopkins, Assistant Director – Property at Aragon said: “It’s great to be able work alongside Kriss and Construction Gateway on this project. It’s a fantastic opportunity for everyone taking part to benefit from all the experience and knowledge we all have to offer.”
Throughout the course, which includes training by Construction Gateway in painting and decorating, tiling, carpentry and health and safety, Aragon will be providing help and support to any participants.
On top of this, The Akabusi Charitable Trust, lead by Kriss, will be delivering fundamental business skills as well as incorporating input from Barclays Bank; CV writing and referencing.
Kriss Akabusi said: “I am delighted that we can work with Aragon on this really exciting partnership. One of the things I love about my work now is inspiring the younger generation in the same way I was inspired when I was younger into working hard at something which changed my life forever.”
At the end of the programme, participants will have a qualification in construction, a portfolio and updated CV, references from i-Tang, Aragon and Construction Gateway as well as follow up support and guidance from Aragon’s Youth Officer.
They will also be offered an opportunity to apply for an apprenticeship placement where they will go on to train with Aragon and gain further qualifications.
