A housing director has triumphed over some of the biggest organisations in the country to top a list which recognises the impact of excellent HR professionals.

Circle Housing’s Sarah Trota was named ‘HR Director of the Year’ by Personnel Today in their annual awards whose shortlist included some of  the most high profile FTSE 100, global and not for profit organisations around including KPMG, Royal Mail, McDonalds, Barclays and EDF energy.

In her role as Executive Director of People, Sarah has brought her experience of working for FTSE 100 organisations such as Waterstones, Sainsbury PLC and HMV Group to Circle Housing, shifting the corporate mindset from ‘resident’ to ‘customer’.

In a year of unprecedented change for the housing sector, Sarah has saved the organisation over £2.5m by reviewing the delivery of HR training. A new repairs and maintenance programme will also deliver more than £100m of cost efficiency over ten years. In addition, Sarah’s focus on leadership and performance development, has increased internal promotions by 60% and reduced performance management issues by 40%.

Judges praised Sarah’s switch to the housing sector saying: “Sarah has made a remarkable transition from the PLC environment into the not-for-profit sector, bringing commerciality and credibility to her new role. She has demonstrated clear vision, leadership and tangible outcomes.”

Mark Rogers, Circle Housing’s Chief Executive, said: "We are delighted to see Sarah recognised amongst such exceptional HR competition and this achievement is great news in our push to make Circle a brilliant place to work with fantastic people who care.

Sarah added, “Naturally it is really exciting to receive an award like this, and I would like to thank everyone across the business for supporting the delivery of our achievements this year.

“It has been a tough year for our customers and our colleagues, and it is testament to the strength, resilience and talent of our teams to have received this recognition.”

The announcement tops a great year for Circle Housing, which was last week named as Best Employer in Norfolk at the EDP Business Awards.  The organisation has also been shortlisted in the HR Distinction Awards which will be held in the New Year.
