Welwyn Hatfield Community Housing Trust invites tenants to ‘Trade Places’

On 27 November Welwyn Hatfield Community Housing Trust will host two special events to help tenants who are looking to move.
‘Trading Places’ will take place between 1-3pm and 6-8pm at the Focalare Centre in Welwyn Garden City. The aim is to match up tenants who are seeking a larger home with those looking to downsize, enabling them to swap homes.
The Trust is joining forces with six housing associations with homes in the borough, plus the Citizens Advice Bureau to run the events. The format will be similar to speed dating, so that tenants can quickly find out with each other whether they are suitable home swap partners.
With several thousand people on the housing waiting list in Welwyn Hatfield, tenants who need to move can face a wait of many months, or even years before being successful. Swapping homes – known as ‘mutually exchanging’ – with another tenant can be a much quicker way of finding a home suited to their needs.
Chair of the Trust’s Board, Paul Wren, said, “We identified that it can be difficult for tenants to find someone to exchange with, particularly if they don’t have access to the internet, so felt this personal approach may work better. Our particular focus is to help those who have been affected by the changes to housing benefit and need to move to a smaller home, but of course it will also benefit families who are overcrowded and need somewhere bigger.”
Following the government’s changes to housing benefits in April this year, the Trust has already helped nearly 100 tenants who have been affected to downsize to a smaller home. If Trading Places proves successful, similar events could be held on a regular basis in the future.
