Staff from City West Housing Trust are to undertake a daunting trek across theGreat Wall of Chinato raise much needed funds for two charities as part of Hospice Care Week.
A total of 19 staff from the landlord, which owns and manages 14,600 homes across West Salford, is taking part in a gruelling 70 kilometre trek between October 9th and 19th to raise more than £47,000 for St Ann’s Hospice in Greater Manchester and the Alzheimer’s Society.
The City West team will also be joined by staff from partner companies including Miller Metcalfe, Seddon, First Choice Homes, Stockport Homes and Alternative Futures Group.
Each person taking part in the trek will raise a minimum of £2,500 through a variety of activities in the build up to Hospice Care Week, which ran from 7th to 13th October and kicks off with a ‘Hair for Hospices’ campaign.
City West’s Deputy Chief Executive, Colette McKune, got into the fundraising spirit by braving the barber’s clippers and having her head shaved in front of her colleagues to raise cash for the cause.
“People undergoing treatment in hospices often have to make big sacrifices all the time”, said Colette. “So I decided I was happy to sacrifice my hair to show my support for Hair for Hospices.
“It’s really an honour to undertake the fundraising forSt Ann’s Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society.
“It will be an amazing challenge to trek across the Great Wall, seeing some fantastic sights and doing something positive for the two charities at the same time.”
Along with Colette’s head shave City West staff have hosted a series of fundraising events, including cake sales, race nights and discos.
Hospice Care Week aims to raise awareness of the wide range of support that charities such asSt Ann’s Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society provide for people with life limiting illnesses.
Katrina Bury, Fundraising Manager at St Ann’s Hospice in Greater Manchester said: “At St Ann’s, we only get around one third of our funding from the NHS. This is why, as a charity, we rely on the support of generous individuals and local organisations, like City West, to be able to continue our work.
“It is absolutely fantastic that the team from City West are going to such amazing lengths to help us raise our much-needed funds. From everyone at St Ann’s, we’d like to thank the City West trekking team for their great help and wish them all the best on their exciting adventure.”
