MPs to receive 2.33% pay rise from April 1
It's going to be a bleak winter for the country's badgers, accused of being responsible for almost all the country's rural problems. Now they could be gassed.
The BBC has reported that the government is "exploring the possibility of gassing badgers to cull carriers of bovine TB".
Environment Secretary Owen Paterson, who uniquely had two badgers as pets while growing up in Cheshire, told MPs that gassing was being considered.
A six week trial of badger culling in Somerset has just ended with badger hunters asking for more time as they haven't shot enough.
Paterson said the Department for Food and Rural Affairs was looking at other methods including the use of gas but would not use it "unless it is proven to be safe, humane, and effective."
Labour MP Barry Sheerman called on Paterson to resign and said the cull was "morally reprehensible".
