Madeley Academy students join Sanctuary and Seddon at Telford site
A group of construction students from Madeley Academy were welcomed by Sanctuary Group and their contractors, Seddon, as they visited the Telford Millennium Community site in Ketley on Thursday morning (3 October).
The visit was part of an on-going partnership between the three organisations, with Sanctuary working with Seddon to offer valuable work place experience to the students across a number of its local housing developments.
During Thursday’s visit, a group of 12 students were given a tour of the Telford Millennium Community site where 86 extra care apartments for the over 55s will be built alongside 12 apartments specifically designed for people with learning difficulties. The students also visited Glen Cottages, a nearby site where 14 affordable homes are under development.
Dave Williams, local Development Manager for Sanctuary, said: “Sanctuary always strives to include opportunities for training and employment as an integral part of its development programmes and we are delighted to be working with Seddon to offer on-site experience for Madeley Academy students.
“We started Thursday’s visit by heading up to the flat roof on the third floor of Sanctuary’s offices in Ketley Park Road where there is a camera filming progress on the construction site opposite. This gave the students a bird’s eye view of what was happening on the development, and a good overview of the project as a whole.”
He explained that the group then toured the site, where they learnt more about the build process and took a closer look at site plans and drawings. Members of the on-site construction team also gave an overview of their individual roles and how this fits into the construction process as a whole.
Maggie Heap, Community Project Manager with Seddon, added: “These students may well be part of the wider construction industry workforce in the future and we are keen to assist as they make career choices, develop new skills and deepen their understanding of the building trade. We were impressed with the level of interest and enthusiasm shown throughout the visit and look forward to working with Madeley Academy on future projects.”
Lady Maria Satchwell, head teacher at Madeley Academy, said: “This site visit was arranged as part of an on-going partnership between Sanctuary Group, Seddon and Madeley Academy which aims to enrich the students’ education by helping them develop their understanding of the world of work. First-hand experience of this kind is invaluable in helping bring the curriculum to life and showing students how their classroom learning is applied in the workplace.”
The Ketley Park Road site is part funded by the Homes and Communities Agency and is being developed in partnership with Telford and Wrekin Council.
