Older People’s Day was celebrated in style in Streatham with dazzling dance displays and home cooked food from East Africa.
Housing association, AmicusHorizon, held the event at Wavel Court, an older people’s housing scheme, on Tuesday (1 October).
The event also celebrated the launch of Black History Month and Eid festival which is held at the end of Ramadan. Over 30 people attended the celebration, which was organised in partnership with Wavel Court Residents’ Association. Older residents from a neighbouring scheme were also invited to join the fun.
Entertainment included traditional dances and music from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Uganda.
Older People’s Day coincides with the United Nations’ International Day of Older Persons and is celebrated annually on 1 October. It aims to recognise the contribution that older people make to society and tackle negative attitudes and stereotypes.
Alma Haq, Resident Involvement Manager at AmicusHorizon, said: "Older people have put so much into our society and their contribution and achievements should be celebrated. I’m absolutely delighted that everyone had such a great day."
Monica Barnes, Chair of the Older People’s Forum at AmicusHorizon, said: "This event has been absolutely brilliant. It’s wonderful to see such a diverse group of older people enjoying themselves like this."
