Home swap by speed dating

Riverside has teamed up with other housing associations and House Exchange to hold a speed-dating event to make it easier for tenants to move home.
All social housing tenants, regardless of their landlord, are welcome to attend the event on 15 October at Quaker Meeting House in Liverpool, whether you are looking to downsize to avoid the government’s under-occupation penalty or you need somewhere bigger to accommodate your growing family.
Tenants will have the opportunity to advertise their properties on boards around the venue and to find their ideal new home from the many properties available through House Exchange. They will also wear stickers denoting what property they currently have and what they’re looking for. Plus, anybody who registers for the online service, on the day, can do so completely free of charge.
Sarah Gilliland, Riverside’s project officer responsible for mutual exchange, said: “We have over 2,000 Riverside tenants registered on HomeSwapper and House Exchange already and we have seen a 100% increase in sign-ups since the ‘bedroom tax’ penalties came into effect in April.
“Around 80 people have successfully found an exchange within the last 12 months but the more people who sign up, the better the chances of successful exchange.”
Sarah added: “Mutual exchange support forms part of a raft of Riverside initiatives, including money and affordable warmth advice, to help people cope with the burden of welfare benefit cuts.
“Our community engagement officers will be on hand at the event to offer advice and support on employment and training, financial inclusion and affordable warmth.”
National Housing Federation estimates suggest there are 180,000 households under-occupying two-bedroom homes, but just 70,000 properties for them to downsize to. The demand for smaller properties has risen in response to the new government policy, but there are not enough smaller properties to meet this demand.
The House Exchange speed-dating event takes place on Tuesday 15 October between 1.30pm and 4.30pm at the Quaker Meeting House on School Lane, Liverpool City Centre.
