House-swapping roadshow arrives in Mole Valley

More than 100 social housing tenants flocked to a home swapping roadshow as it arrived in Mole Valley last Thursday (26th September).
Mole Valley Housing Association (MVHA), part of Circle Housing Group, hosted the event at its Dorking headquarters to show local people how switching homes with another social housing tenant could help them move more easily or escape the affects of the under-occupation penalty, commonly known as the bedroom tax.
They got the chance to find the right home for their needs by meeting potential swappers and signing up to websites like houseexchange.org.uk which automatically matching house-seekers with homes that meet their needs.
MVHA staff were also on hand to offer advice about welfare reform, welfare benefits, debt advice and employment and training opportunities.
David Searle, Managing Director at MVHA said: “The excellent turnout to last week’s event proves just how many people in MoleValleyare desperate to move so they can find work, save on costs, or get the right property for the size of their household.
“More people than ever are turning to mutual exchange services like House Exchange when it comes to finding a new home and we’re doing all we can at Mole Valley Housing Association to show them how easy this can be.”
MVHA teamed up with organisations including Rosebery Housing Association, Runnymede Borough Council and A2Dominion to run the roadshow which follows new figures which reveal more people than ever are swapping their homes due to a lack of social housing.
More than 870 people inSurreyhave registered on houseexchange.org.uk since the introduction of the under-occupation penalty in April this year – 50% more than during the same time last year. Thousands of social housing tenants with a spare room have seen their benefits cut following its introduction.
Residents who missed out can attend events in Addlestone, Staines and Redhill over the next month. Call Mole Valley Housing Association on 0800 634 9876 / 0300 333 0001 for more information on how to take part.
