South London housing association Wandle has announced newly elected Chair Richard Raeburn. Formally elected at the Annual General Meeting in late September 2013, he was previously Vice Chairman and has been a board member since 2008.
Raeburn is also Chairman of the European Association of Corporate Treasurers, leading the effort to ensure the views of the ‘real economy’ are represented in the financial regulation debate in Europe. He is a Trustee and chairs the investment committee at St. Christopher’s Hospice.
Richard Raeburn said of his appointment:
"I'm delighted to lead Wandle at a time when there are great challenges facing the social housing sector. Given my time on the Board I’ve seen us make great strides in refining the business and taking on a refreshed direction that really meets the needs of the local communities we work with. I look forward to continuing to work with a great team and especially ensuring we do our utmost to help people meet their housing needs and aspirations."
As a South London based social business working across nine South London boroughs, Wandle owns and manages around 7,000 homes.
Wandle Chief Executive Sara Thakkar said of his appointment:
“We are delighted to have Richard as our new Chair, as Wandle works towards becoming a ground-breaking social business that uses our significant financial and asset strength to deliver new homes and invest in people and communities in our core Boroughs of South London. Richard’s experience across the finance sector and his deep insight of Wandle gained over the five years he has been with us mean he is well placed to help set our future strategic direction and to ensure that we remain a well governed, financially viable business. He is a great advocate for our organisation and together we will ensure Wandle continue to deliver into the long term.
“I would personally like to thank our outgoing Chair Philip Sturrock following his three year term with us. Philip has made an invaluable contribution to Wandle and has steered us through a challenging change management programme that has ensured we will be fit for the future and a flexible innovative business. Under his tenure Wandle maintained its financial strength, delivered more homes and improved our services to our customers ensuring that they are at the centre of everything we do.”
Philip Sturrock said: “I’m pleased to step down and leave Wandle at a time of sound financial strength. Our recent performance and governance standards assessment by the HCA confirms our solid position and our desire to manage and operate efficiently to meet required economic standards and drive value for money services. Wandle is in good hands with Richard as Chair, he has been a key member of the Board and is a great asset to the wider Wandle team.”
Wandle retained its G1 and V1 Governance and Viability regulatory judgement, as published by social housing regulator the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) on 24 September 2013.
The Wandle Board meet regularly throughout the year and set the strategic direction for Wandle, establishing policies and plans in order to achieve key objectives. Raeburn joins a Board currently comprised of 10 members, one of whom is a resident. Board members also serve on the asset investment, remuneration, and audit committees for Wandle.
Wandle are currently recruiting another resident Board member and two further independent NED's to compliment the existing team.
