Cross Keys Homes helps local residents improve prospects in Peterborough

A group of unemployed young people have taken part in a three-week practical employment training project in Bretton to help them learn new construction skills that they can add to their CVs.
11 local people attended the practical employment training project which was run by Groundwork Hertfordshire and funded by Cross Keys Homes.
Held at Tyesdale Centre the young people who were referred by Cross Keys Homes’ Working 4 U programme and Jobcentreplus were able to learn about the landscaping and construction trade and are now busy working towards a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) qualification and health & safety card.
The skills the young people learnt over the course of the three weeks were put to good use by completing a final landscape improvement project at Tyesdale. The group constructed a green space outside the local shops by laying a synthetic lawn and building raised beds filled with plants.
Project participant Shaun Barter, 26, said: “The project was really good. To be honest, when I first started I didn’t think I’d enjoy it but when I left after the first session I just wanted to come straight back.
“Everyone has benefited from this project and we have all enjoyed meeting new people. It’s definitely been worthwhile.”
Cross Keys Homes’ Community Investment Manager, Christina Malle, added: “We are extremely pleased to have funded and been involved in this project, which has helped these young people considerably.
“We hope they can now go on and find employment thanks to the new practical skills they have been able to gain over the course of this project.”
Chris Dungate, Employment Manager at Groundwork Hertfordshire, added: “It’s been a pleasure to work with the 11 volunteers at Tyesdale.
“This Green Skills project has seen them all work very hard to create two new areas for the community to enjoy together. Now that the project has finished, it’s a great time for them to seek employment or further training opportunities.”
