The Salfordian Hotel in Southport
Two housing providers have joined forces to provide low-cost holidays by the seaside for Salford’s most vulnerable and isolated residents.
Salford-based Salix Homes and City West Housing Trust have teamed up to offer elderly people experiencing loneliness and isolation subsidised breaks at the Salfordian Hotel in Southport.
The Salfordian was built by Salford Council in 1963 to provide a ‘home from home’ for residents and their carers, with 24-hour on-call support.
Now Salix Homes and City West have pledged to tackle social isolation amongst older people in Salford and are urging residents to take advantage of the low-cost holidays on offer.
The housing providers are hosting Single Travellers Week from November 6 – 13 aimed at elderly and vulnerable people who are on their own to provide a welcome break and some much-needed company.
Sue Sutton, director of customer and neighbourhood services at Salix Homes, said: “For the past 50 years the hotel has offered a lifeline to our most vulnerable residents and their families and we are proud to support it.
“There are a lot of lonely, older people in Salford who perhaps feel they cannot go on holiday because they don’t have anyone to go with. Loneliness and social isolation in older people can have a severe impact on their health and quality of life which is why we have teamed up with City West to offer subsidised breaks to people who are on their own.
“The winter months in particular can be a very lonely time and we want to ensure older people who are alone can enjoy a seaside getaway, meet other people and improve their wellbeing.”
Matt Jones, Assistant Director of Communities and Neighbourhoods at City West Housing Trust, said: “We know that feeling lonely and isolated is an issue for some of our older customers. This is something we’re tackling at City West in a number of ways including through our support of subsidised holidays at the Salfordian.
“Socialising, meeting new people and a nice break away from everything can really lift people’s spirits and improve their wellbeing, which is why we’re delighted to be hosting Single Travellers Week at the Salfordian in partnership with Salix Homes.
“The Salfordian is making a really positive difference to older people’s lives and it’s great to see the hotel and the service it provides going from strength to strength.”
Although staff at the Salfordian are not carers, they are able to provide a level of support that is rarely available at other hotels. The hotel also runs a door-to-door transport service for Salford residents.
The hotel has been hugely popular with residents over the years providing guests with a seaside getaway and offering respite for families who are caring for elderly relatives, but just before Christmas disaster struck when hotel bosses were told a vital electrics overhaul on the Grade II listed building would cost £52,000 and they were forced to close the doors to the public.
But thanks to a mammoth fundraising campaign launched by Salford’s Deputy Mayor Cllr David Lancaster the vital works were completed and it re-opened to huge fanfare earlier this year.
Single Travellers Week is for any elderly person in Salford who is travelling alone. They do not have to be a Salix Homes or City West tenant. The cost of a week’s stay Full Board is £105.
The two housing provider are also organising City West Week from October 16 -23 and Salix Homes Week from January 15-22 and March 12-19, offering subsidised breaks exclusively for their customers.
