Sanctuary gets national recognition for its commitment to training

Sanctuary Group has become the first Registered Provider of social housing in England to be awarded National Skills Academy for Construction status.
The leading housing and care provider has long ensured that its development projects deliver not only affordable high quality homes but also create local job and training opportunities – core objectives achieved by working closely with lead contractors, their supply chains and other partners. Sanctuary’s commitment to creating employment opportunities in this way have now been formalised as part of the National Skills Academy for Construction’s (NSAfC) Client Based Approach model.
The NSAfC is delivered by CITB, the Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board for Construction, and aims to deliver high quality, tailored construction training to prepare people for jobs, up-skill the existing workforce and attract new talent to the industry.
Sanctuary is currently delivering its largest development programme to date, which will see it build around 5,000 units of accommodation at a cost of over £750 million, having secured grant funding from both the Homes & Communities Agency and the Scottish Government. This will include many types of developments, from social housing, supported and sheltered housing units to care homes and extra care schemes.
The programme will be delivered by a range of construction companies - from small and medium sized companies to national house-builders – who will all be required to deliver training and employment opportunities in the communities where the development takes place.
Karen Blacklaw, Strategic Partnership Adviser for CITB, said: “I’m delighted to see Sanctuary Housing Group being awarded National Skills Academy for Construction status. Their use of our Client Based Approach model will ensure best practice through construction procurement and will deliver skills, training and job opportunities which will help to grow the local communities they are working in”.
Peter Martin, Sanctuary’s group director for development, said: “Sanctuary’s goals and expectations are high – both in terms of the homes we build and the employment and training opportunities our developments help create. We are extremely proud to have been awarded National Skills Academy for Construction status, and hope that this national recognition will further help us in offering apprenticeships, work experience placements and local jobs through the contractors we use.”
He added: “We strive to ensure that each project brings the widest possible benefits to the local community, and our success in gaining NSAfC status is very much thanks to the on-going support of our contractors and other partners. This national award is an important milestone, and we hope to use it to help create more employment and training opportunities, to leave a lasting legacy long after the development itself is completed.”
As part of the programme, Sanctuary will also be developing closer links with local schools and colleges, offering construction related work experience and a range of apprenticeship opportunities on its new developments, as well as improving the skills of contractor and sub-contractor workforces.
