Topping out ceremony
Mayor Norma Redfern and Cllr John Harrison joined staff from Kier North Tyneside at a ‘topping out’ ceremony on Friday 23 August. The event was held to celebrate reaching the tallest point in the construction of the first new build council housing in North Tyneside for 24 years.
Twelve new homes are currently under construction on the site of the former Wallsend Boys Club in Station Road, Wallsend, with work being carried out by the council’s joint venture partner Kier North Tyneside.
It was a dual celebration, as the Kier site also received an excellent Considerate Constructors Scheme report this month, highlighting the company’s commitment to improving the service it delivers to its customers, neighbours and employees.
Kier regional director, Mike Furze, said: “We are proud to be part of a project that will benefit the council and local residents for years to come. By working in partnership with our colleagues at North Tyneside Council we believe we will make a real difference in improving the quality of housing for people across the region.”
Elected Mayor, Norma Redfern, commented: “I’m delighted to be part of this topping out ceremony, which is a significant milestone in the building of high quality council homes for people in North Tyneside.
“These lovely bungalows and apartments in the heart of Wallsend are the first council homes to be built in the borough for 24 years – but they certainly won’t be the last!
“Only a few weeks ago we announced that work is to start soon on the building and refurbishment of more than 900 apartments in our sheltered housing schemes, which will make a tremendous difference to the lives of our older tenants. As a council we believe in quality homes for quality people and we’re committed to working with our partners to ensure that we deliver on that pledge.”
The development is made up of six two-bedroom bungalows, three two-bedroom apartments and three one-bedroom apartments, with £1.1m in investment. The proposed completion date is late September 2013.
