The Mayor of Stockport officially opening Penny Lane Pantry
The Mayor and Mayoress of Stockport officially opened Penny Lane Pantry at the Lancashire Hill fun day on Saturday 17 August and the pantry opened its doors to its first 50 members on Monday 19 August.
The pantry is an exciting new concept of a community store based in Hanover Towers, Lancashire Hill. It offers residents at Lancashire Hill access to discounted food items worth at least £15, for a weekly membership of just £2! The initiative is believed to be one of the first of its kind launched by a housing organisation.
The Mayor and Mayoress were shown around the pantry and introduced to Leanne Benfold, one of Stockport Homes’ customers who is working in the store as a volunteer and Lee Bowden, who won the ‘name the store’ competition.
The successful project was a team effort that involved a number of partners including Stockport Homes, Stockport Council, Stockport PCT and Repair 1st. The old office space was revamped free of charge into the community store by Repair 1st through a partnership with B4Box, a scheme that supports young people gain employment in building and construction.
Supplies will come from a range of sources including FareShare, a national food redistribution charity committed to tackling hunger and reducing food waste, bulk buying initiatives and local social enterprises such as CASU Green Man Market which focus on fresh and locally grown produce.
Leanne Benfold, Stockport Homes’ customer and volunteer at Penny Lane Pantry said, “I’m so excited about working in the pantry. It’s a real opportunity to gain experience for future employment and to support my local community – my family are so proud of me taking this first step. I’d really recommend others to do the same.”
Anna Jones, Food Sharing Officer, Stockport Homes said, “It is fantastic that the Mayor of Stockport officially opened Penny Lane Pantry as it is our first community store. There are another 50 memberships available, so customers need to sign up soon so they don’t miss out now – though we will be looking to expand the scheme further in the future!”
