Riverside are committed to helping raise the prosperity of tenants and residents and recently entered into a “retail route way” project with Dunelm Mill in Trafford Park, Manchester. This was a six week work trial to see whether working in a retail environment was the right route for the candidates on the programme.
Two of Riverside’s tenants from Langley, Lewis Jacques and Carol-Anne White commenced on this programme eight weeks ago and have now secured permanent employment with Dunelm Mill which based at Trafford Park.
Michael Shiels, manager at Dunelm Mill said “We had two vacnacies that we needed filling and rather than interview and take on the candidates immediately, we decided to try this programme to enable both us and the candidates see whether the retail environment was right for them.”
Carol-Ann said had spent a year looking for a job when she was approached by Riverside while she was on work experience at The Demense community centre in Langley. She said “It was really strange at first and it is a lot to take in but I am really enjoying the variety of the job.”
Lewis had originally commenced one of Riverside’s other work programmes working on a void property on the estate, but construction just wasn’t for him.
Lewis’s said “I can’t praise Riverside enough for giving me this opportunity. It is so difficult for young people to find employment. I was quite worried about what I would do once I had finished my GCSEs but Riverside and the Burnside Community Centre have been wonderful in helping me to get this job.”
Phil McNabb, Riverside’s employment and training officer said “Our aim is to help local people access employment and training opportunities within their communities by delivering programmes and projects in partnership with other organisations. We hope that our partnership with Dunelm Mill is the start of many opportunities to assist our tenants to find employment”.
Phil added “Lewis and Carol-Anne worked really hard to secure these positions and we wish them the best of luck as they start their careers.”
