An innovative and unique facility delivering training for local people has been awarded a BREEAM accreditation, which recognised Kier’s commitment to the environment and sustainability. The Sheaf Training Centre in Norwood, which was built in partnership between Kier and Sheffield City Council, was praised as one of the best sites in the country.

The project was awarded for its efforts in sustainability, which included steps to reduce the environmental impact of the build, such as moving birds and bats to safer surroundings, ensuring there was minimal negative impact to local wildlife. By following the BREEAM framework, Kier was able to finely tune the construction process and to ensure the building is operated as efficiently as possible.

With all its building projects, Kier places a strong emphasis on reducing its carbon footprint. The Sheaf Training Centre was specially designed to minimise energy usage, both during construction and once the building was operational. The building includes innovative systems, such as lighting that turns on and off when movement is sensed, which cut costs and reduce CO2 emissions. The project also scored highly for its dedication to using reclaimed materials. Throughout the building process, Kier used recycled materials where possible.

The Sheaf Training Centre, which is owned by Life Long Learning, was built to provide vital training in construction, nursing and horticulture to local residents in Sheffield. Construction students from the college were invited on site to view the progress of the project during the construction process, which helped them gain valuable experience of how a site works.

Kier regional managing director, Simon Bullen, said: “Kier is constantly working to reduce its impact on the environment and this national accreditation further recognises the work we have undertaken. We are extremely proud to be recognised for our commitment to sustainability and the environment.”

This is the first Kier project in Sheffield to be recognised by BREEAM, and Kier is looking to gain further acknowledgment on other projects, and will implement the scheme’s aims on future works.

BREEAM is the world's foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings, and the accreditation is awarded based on providing sustainable building, construction and operation, throughout the building process.
