Genesis has officially launched its 500-home development of the former Anglia Ruskin University site in the centre of Chelmsford.
A total of 507 homes will be built on the site by 2015 in three phases, providing a mix of affordable and private new homes.
Genesis CEO Neil Hadden said: "This development demonstrates our ongoing commitment to building affordable homes and creating places where people want to live. It takes just 30 minutes by train to get to Liverpool Street from Chelmsford, and only 20 minutes to Stratford, so we envisage that these homes will attract a lot of interest from people who are working in the capital but simply can’t afford to live there."
Genesis chair Charles Gurassa and Councillor Roy Whitehead, leader of Chelmsford Council, attended the ceremony at the civic centre offices. The Homes and Communities Agency as well as representatives from the construction firm Denne, part of the Bouygues Group, also attended.
