Planning permission gives new use to former infant school

Housing 21, a leading provider of housing, care and health services for older people has been granted planning permission for a new housing scheme in Derby.
Built on the site of the former Sunnyhill Infant School, the 70 unit extra care housing scheme will provide 35 affordable rent and 35 shared ownership properties for people aged 55 and over. Residents will be able to enjoy the privacy of their own apartment whilst still having the opportunity to interact with their neighbours in the communal space, which will include a restaurant and residents’ lounges.
Karen Lewis, Regional Operations Director for Housing 21 said: “We are delighted that this new development has achieved planning permission and are looking forward to working with Derby City Council in bringing the scheme to fruition. This new development will complement Handyside Court, another Housing 21 extra care scheme in Derby which was completed in 2009.”
Extra care housing differs from residential care because residents retain their independence. They live in their own apartment with their own front door with care tailored to individual needs.
Councillor Fareed Hussain, Cabinet Member for Adults and Health said: “We are pleased that this key development to provide high quality housing alongside appropriate care and support for older residents has been granted planning permission and will shortly start on site. The planned extra care accommodation of 70 flats will be high quality and allow people to live independently in the community.”
The £8 million development will also provide a laundry room, assisted bathing suite, therapy rooms, hair and beauty salon, shop, guest accommodation for visiting family and friends and a multi-function activity space.
It is expected that the doors to the new development will open in the autumn of 2014.
