Tenants on Jarrow’s Low Simonside estate are delighted at the completion of Decent Homes works to their homes.
Over seventy homes on the estate have received the full range of internal improvements, including new kitchens, bathrooms, efficient heating systems and rewires as part of the South Tyneside Homes Decent Homes programme.
The first phase of works, which began in summer 2012, is now completed The £700 k investment to these homes has brought them up to the South Tyneside Homes Decent Standard.
Some vulnerable tenants required rehousing whilst their homes were modernised, while most remained in their homes during the works and were given full support from the Customer Liaison Team.
Residents will now benefit from warmer homes, improved health and wellbeing and also reduced fuel bills. Customer satisfaction has been excellent and South Tyneside Homes has received some fantastic feedback from very satisfied residents about the improvements that have transformed their homes.
The Programme has run for eight months, was managed by the Decent Homes Delivery Team and the work completed by partner contractor Gentoo Construction.
Ward Members Fay Cunningham, Arthur Meeks and Margaret Peacock joined South Tyneside Homes staff to visit some satisfied customers and hear first hand their thoughts on the improvements which have changed their homes and lives.
Mrs Sheelagh Alford of Falmouth Drive said, “The work has been fabulous and nothing was too much trouble for the team. I’m thrilled to bits. The set of workmen was fantastic and there was great customer liaison from South Tyneside Homes,” and Ms Irene Edwards of Salcombe Avenue said, “I’m very pleased with the works. Everything’s great, and my fire’s lovely.”
Speaking about the works, Councillor Meeks said, “The feedback’s been great, really good.”
Councillor Peacock said, “This work has been long awaited and well looked-forward to and there have been no complaints”, while Councillor Cunningham added, “The homes are absolutely beautiful and everyone should be really pleased with the work that South Tyneside Homes and Gentoo have been doing.”
