Greenfields Community Housing’s contractor, Gipping Construction, began building eight new affordable homes in Sible Hedingham, Essex, at the end of 2012. The site is a former Greenfields older persons’ scheme which was closed in 2009 following a review by Greenfields when 13 out of the 17 flats were empty despite extensive advertising.
Following a comprehensive assessment in partnership with the local District Council, it was established that affordable new homes were needed in the area and the wider District. Local residents have been consulted with since November 2011, as well as the Parish Council, MPs, councillors, neighbouring residents and other stakeholders.
The homes will comprise of four one-bedroom flats, two two-bedroom houses one three-bedroom house and one four-bedroom house. Each home will have two parking spaces and be built to the latest quality standards and environmental considerations. Building work is expected to be completed by Autumn 2013. Greenfields is currently building 12 other affordable homes within Essex.
Alan Wyatt, Chairman of Greenfields, said: “As always, seeing the commencement of new homes being built is a great feeling, because we know that in a few month’s time, we will be able to hand over the keys to tenants who we hope will be very happy living there. Building new homes is one of our priorities in the next three years and I am delighted to be a part of this whole experience.”
