Shropshire's largest social landlord's chief executive has announced that he will be stepping down this year.

Martin Holland has been in charge at Shropshire Housing Group (SHG) for the last 21 years and told staff in December of his decision to retire from the role.

Mr Holland, who has worked in the sector for over 40 years, joined SHG in 1991 and went on to help pull together the group of companies under the SHG banner in 2007.

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Housing, Mr Holland has also worked in local government, the voluntary sector and as a consultant during his career. He will leave his post at the end of July, when his successor will be in place.

When announcing his retirement before staff, Mr Holland took the opportunity to praise the more than 250-strong workforce for its commitment to continuously improving the organisation.

Mr Holland said: "I will be sad to leave this excellent organisation and the hard-working, caring people who make it what it is. It was a difficult decision to make, but I am clear that it is the right thing for me. I won't be retiring completely, I have a number of projects I wish to pursue, which will enable me to maintain my links to housing.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to see the organisation change, grow and adapt to shifting circumstances and priorities over the years. I have watched as the Shropshire Housing Group team have worked on a daily basis to change for the better the lives of the individuals and communities we serve. I know that the Group and the people in it have a great future ahead of them."

Group chair, Shena Latto, added: "The search for Mr Holland's replacement will begin immediately. We are very sorry that Martin is leaving us. His commitment to improving housing opportunities for local people has been absolute and he has been instrumental in making Shropshire Housing Group what it is today. We will miss him."

Shropshire Housing Group includes Meres & Mosses Housing Association, operating in the north of the county, South Shropshire Housing Association and maintenance firm, Total Response Limited.
