Nearly 1,500 social homes have been sold under the Government's relaunched Right to Buy scheme since the beginning of April this year, according to figures released today by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

The data shows local authorities sold an estimated 1,487 homes under Right to Buy between April 1 and September 30, with more than 1,000 of those being purchased by tenants since the end of June.

Despite the Government's pledge to build one-for-one replacements for sold homes under the new scheme, just under 250 new homes were started on site or acquired during the same period.

Local authorities have received a combined total of £86 million in Right to Buy sales receipts during this period.

The figures from DCLG relate only to sales by local authorities under the Right to Buy scheme, excluding sales by registered providers under preserved right to buy.
