Over this month (November 2012), a young person from Bognor living in a Sanctuary Supported Living Scheme is to be featured in a campaign highlighting the success of Britain Works, Microsoft’s programme to help people into work.

Sarah McLellan was among 30 young people to take part in the pilot programme, and she is now being highlighted as one of the stars of the scheme, with her story being featured on posters at Westminster Underground station throughout November.

Sanctuary Group has been working in partnership with Microsoft Academy to create IT learning opportunities at five of Sanctuary’s supported housing schemes.

Under the scheme, young people are given access to laptops and training in a range of software such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and to use the internet to search for employment and complete college work.

The leading housing and care provider has contributed £30,000 through the project which has been used to pay for computers, training and broadband.

As a reward for successfully completing the training programme, Sarah, along with a small group of other young people living in Sanctuary Supported Living schemes, were also given an opportunity to hone their IT skills and get a head start in the job market through a week of work experience with Microsoft and BT.

The participants were able to get a behind the scenes look at the IT industry, as well as one-to-one careers advice, help with preparing their CVs and training on presentation skills.

Sarah said: “I came to live at Linden Road in Bognor with a suitcase and no prospects. One year on, Sanctuary has helped me grow as a young adult and helped me realise what opportunities there are for young people like myself. Now I’m finishing my A-levels this year and hope to start at University in September.

“The photo-shoot for the poster campaign was a great opportunity. I really enjoyed travelling to London for the experience. It was nice to get my hair and makeup done for it and I can’t wait to see the result!”
