County Durham housing company Dale & Valley Homes is in the final three vying for a nationwide title at the National Apprenticeship Awards.
The awards, run by the National Apprenticeship Service, recognise excellence in businesses that employ apprentices, with the overall winners announced at The Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham on 14th November. Dale & Valley Homes is a finalist in the medium employer category.
Dale & Valley Homes, which has been employing apprentices since 2006, was selected for the finals because it gives opportunities to local youngsters to develop a career in housing and continue progressing long after their apprenticeship is over.
Around one in three employees at the company are current or former apprentices.
On hearing that the organisation was in the running for the top prize, Peter Chaffer, chief executive, said: “We are very proud of your young people and the contribution they make to the company.
“Most of the apprentices who come here to train end up staying on in permanent jobs and they work across the organisation.
“Our apprentice programme, which we run in conjunction with Bishop Auckland College and the North East Chamber of Commerce, enables us to find excellent people to work here and support the local community by providing much needed employment.”
David Way, chief executive of the National Apprenticeship Service, congratulated Dale & Valley Homes on its success.
He said: “Only those employers which can demonstrate they have put apprenticeships right at the heart of their organisation make it through to this stage of the awards. The judges were hugely impressed by Dale & Valley Homes’ commitment to encouraging ambition and enterprise and they are worthy finalists.
“County Durham should be justifiably proud of the company’s achievements and the employment opportunities they are providing to young people in the local area. We are now calling on other employers across the region to pick up the gauntlet and recognise the benefits to their organisation of employing an apprentice.”
