A group of youngsters had an afternoon of fun and games learning to scoot and cycle safely at Coburg Green in the Kings Heath Estate, Exeter organised by Spectrum Signpost.
The afternoon event was a great success despite the impending rain and blowing wind and all the children took part in a skills session with Richard Price from Bikeability who taught them bike and scooter safety, how to handle their bikes and scooters, and road and personal safety.
The children enjoyed whizzing up and down and in and out of the slalom course, as well as competitions and quizzes, one of which was a Timed Trial. The trial was won by Christopher Gale who was awarded a new brake set for his scooter. Other prizes included safety grips, reflective armbands, bells and lights for 2nd and 3rd place as well as a couple of extra awards. Cohen Eynon was awarded a special award for great sportsmanship and Leo Maule, aged 6, for doing his very best as the youngest competitor.
The event was held to inform young people of the dangers of scooting and cycling around the local area to ensure the children understood the issues and hazards of cycling and scooting irresponsibly.
Lisa Elford, Resident Involvement Officer for Spectrum Signpost said” The event was fantastic and community spirit was in full force with the kids finding their mates to join in as well as sharing their bikes and scooters so all could have a go. It was great to see the children so enthusiastic.”
Lisa continued “Richard also spotted an unsafe bicycle and showed the owner how to fix his brakes so they were safe for him to continue. I would like to give a special thanks to the Gale family who helped organise the event, and to Halfords, Tesco's and Sovereign Housing for providing the prizes as well as Clyst Heath Primary School for the use of the equipment on the day and Devon & Cornwall Police for assisting with the event.”
