Two Kier employees have spent several hours clearing an area of land for the Boston Child Minding Service. The land on Spilsby Road is allotment space, and will be used by children as extra space for plants. The allotment is used by 26 child-minding groups from Boston as well as older children from Kirton Middlecott, who support the project by volunteering their time.
The aim of the scheme is to educate children about healthy eating, and teach them how to grow and care for plants and vegetables.
Kier employees Derek Smith and Bryan Roberts cleared the area so that the children can enjoy the facility.
Kier works hard to contribute to the community in Boston, and so far this year has;
- provided 100 bird boxes for children to paint and take home at the Boston Showcase event
- taken part in a 33-mile sponsored cycle raising over £700 for Butterfly Hospice
- provided seven apprenticeships across a range of trades, and work placements for a number of young people (two of whom are now employed by Kier)
- donated goods to the Centre Point Charity to help homeless and vulnerable people.
Kier is also supporting the Operation Christmas Child Scheme, helping underprivileged children throughout the world.
This year, Kier Group has achieved Gold Status in the Business in the Community (BITC) Corporate Responsibility Index - the UK’s leading voluntary benchmark for measuring corporate responsibility.
Kier senior operations manager, Heidi Thompson, said: “We are always mindful of the need to make a positive difference to the places where we live and work. Since the very beginning of the partnership in 2009, Kier employees have shown genuine enthusiasm and true commitment towards corporate responsibility through a range of voluntary support and activity.”
Kier works with Boston Borough Council, Boston Mayflower and L&H Homes to provide a repairs and maintenance service around Boston, Lincolnshire, East Anglia and Nottinghamshire.
