Bowling redesigned for a modern age has come to West Auckland thanks to the Better Homes, Better Lives fund.

New Age Bowling has been added to the activities offered every Tuesday morning at West Auckland Memorial Community Association for groups of people with learning difficulties.

A grant of £300 from the fund, which is managed by Dale & Valley Homes and supported by Gentoo and Esh Property Services, has paid for the equipment, which will be used by around 20 people each week.

Before bowling was introduced the centre could only offer new age curling but now has a choice of games enjoyed by the groups who visit.

Leonora Pattinson, vice chair of Dale & Valley Homes, said: “It is lovely to see how small amounts of money can have such a positive effect in the community. The Better Homes, Better Lives fund is there to help local groups who need up to £500 for new equipment or to launch a new service.

“Dale & Valley Homes and its partners want to support the wider community as well as our customers and this is one of the ways we do that.”
