Hanson Structherm‘s High Build external wall insulation (EWI) system has been used to refurbish a community centre in Wirral helping it achieve the highest SAP A*  energy efficiency rating.

The community centre, on the Woodward Road Estate in Rock Ferry, is part of a three phase regeneration programme being carried out by Bramall Construction for Wirral Partnership Homes. The centre was originally two houses with a low SAP E rating, which have now been combined and restored using Hanson Structherm’s EWI system.

The first phase of the project used almost 20,000 square metresof EWI to refurbish 201 solid wall properties. Phases two and three are now under way and will require 8,320 square metres to refurbish 105 homes on the Dell Estate and a further 31,000 square metres for 360 homes on the North End Estate.

Hanson Structherm’s High Build EWI system is an efficient and cost-effective way of improving the thermal efficiency of a building, reducing both CO2 emissions and energy bills.

The material used consists of a layer of high performance 60mm phenolic insulation boards finished with two coats of base render. Wirral Partnership Homes chose several different finishes to complete the system including a full acrylic finish, a half and half finish with acrylic on the first floor and Macerend brick effect render on the ground floor as well as a full acrylic finish with feature Macerend brick-effect render banding.

Hanson Structherm’s technical manager Ben Edmondson, said: “Residents who have had their homes refurbished using our EWI system are paying around 40 to 50 per cent less for their energy as well as enjoying the improved appearance of their properties.”
