Carlisle's largest social landlord, Riverside, is hoping that their support for this year’s Tour of Britain visit to Carlisle will help inspire local communities to take up cycling and reap the health benefits.

Riverside is supporting Carlisle City Council as the main sponsor of the cycle race’s visit to Carlisle. Plans are well underway to welcome The Tour of Britain to Carlisle this summer, as the city hosts the start of Stage Four of the cycle race on Wednesday, 12 September.

Susan Kellock, Assistant Director of Riverside in Carlisle said:“Riverside is committed to transforming lives and revitalising neighbourhoods. We are delighted to be able to support this exciting event in Carlisle encouraging local communities to cycle – a great activity that benefits health, wellbeing while reducing our carbon footprint.

In addition to supporting the event which will involve 16 local schools we want to use this opportunity to promote the fantastic work of local social enterprise REBIKE who offers quality second-hand refurbished bicycles at affordable prices.

REBIKE also offers our community a huge opportunity providing long term unemployed or people requiring support to gain the skills and confidence to get into employment.”

Following their unrivalled successes at the Tour de France this year, Britain’s own Team Sky will be participating in this September’s Tour of Britain, along with other big name teams as Liquisgas-Cannondale and Garmin-Sharp. Team riders will be confirmed as the summer progresses, although it has been confirmed that Tour de France and Olympic Time Trial Gold medallist Bradley Wiggins will take part.

As an internationally televised event and the country's largest free-to-watch live sporting event, The Tour of Britain is a wonderful opportunity for promoting Carlisle. As part of its journey through the city streets, local residents, schools, businesses and community groups are being invited to join in and welcome the national cycle race.
