50 Affordable New Homes for Southampton

Published by Tina for Spectrum Housing Group in Housing
50 affordable new homes are to be built in Southampton on the former Ordnance Survey site for Spectrum Western Challenge – a subsidiary of Spectrum Housing Group. The first homes are expected to be ready by March 2014. Built by Taylor Wimpey, the Romsey Road site will be known as Compass Point.
Jitinder Takhar, Group Director of Development at Spectrum Housing Group said: "Southampton is a key area for Spectrum's investment. Despite these tough economic times, with new homes coming forward at Centenary Quay over the coming years, a growing pipeline of schemes that we are bidding on, plus the 50 homes on this site with Taylor Wimpey, we are continuing to provide affordable new homes in the city for both our residents and business partners."
37 of the affordable homes will be provided through the affordable rent product (ARP) and 13 will be shared ownership. Of these, 14 houses and 23 flats will be ARP and 7 houses and 6 flats will be shared ownership.
Councillor Warwick Payne, Cabinet Member for Housing and Leisure: “It’s great to see everything in place ready for this scheme to start on site. Ordnance Survey is an exciting site that will bring homes and employment to this part of the city. It’s a challenging time for the housing market nationally and locally, but Taylor Wimpey and Spectrum have shown how strong partnership working, and valuable support for the council can still bring new homes forward. The 50 affordable homes on the Western sector will make a valuable contribution to meeting housing need in the city.”
Building starts in January 2013 and the first homes will be available in March 2014 (13 shared ownership and 13 ARP). The remaining 24 ARP homes will be completed by March 2015.
A further 143 homes are also being built on the site by Taylor Wimpey for sale on the open market.
Spectrum and Taylor Wimpey have been working closely with the Southampton City Council housing team to provide quality homes at affordable prices.
The Compass Point site is a key area in Southampton and within commuting distance of the City Centre. It has outline planning permission for 495 residential homes, open space, and business and retail units.
