ASBI for tenant who stole electricity from Nottingham City Homes
A tenant who stole electricity from Nottingham City Homes has been given an Anti-Social Behaviour Injunction (ASBI).
Jiras Parshad, aged 35, a tenant at the Victoria Centre flat complex on Glasshouse Street in Nottingham, was caught when security officers spotted an extension cable running beneath the door of his flat that was plugged into an electricity wall socket in the main corridor of the building.
In a statement, Nottingham City Homes said: "This was a direct theft of the landlord's electricity supply. The cable was immediately unplugged due to health and safety concerns.
"Wall sockets within the main corridors of the Victoria Centre flat complex are to be used by site maintenance staff only and not to be used by tenants, as in this case, to by-pass paying for their own electricity use."
Mr Parshad appeared at Nottingham County Court and was issued with a one-year ASBI due to the theft of electricity and the breach of tenancy conditions.
Any further tenancy breaches could result in further court again being taken.
Chief Inspector Andy Rooke from Community Protection said: "Any incidents of this kind are not only an illegal extraction of electricity but could also put other residents in danger.
"Any tenant found to be acting in manner that could cause a risk to others will be dealt with immediately either by Nottingham City Homes or by referral to Community Protection depending on the issue raised.
Gill Moy, Director of Housing at NCH, said: "This was very irresponsible behaviour and something we will not tolerate. Our tenants are continually made aware of their responsibilities and those they have to others residents.
"If they break their tenancy agreement with us, then they have to face the consequences – as Mr Parshad is now doing through the issuing of an ASBI."
