What a load of rubbish

Staff from Tamworth Borough Council and their new housing repairs contractor, Mears, held a litter pick around Stonydelph on Wednesday (June 27), and managed to collect 38 bags of rubbish as part of the Love Where You Live campaign.

30 volunteers from Mears joined Street Wardens, the Tamworth Borough Council Tenant Involvement, estate residents and caretaking teams. The litter pick concentrated on the streets of Craven, Crossfell, Camhouses, Calder and Carlcroft.

The volunteers then moved onto Burgess Nature Reserve – better known as The Bumpy – and cleared litter from the site. 

During the morning, more than 640 kg of rubbish was collected, including three sofas, a child’s sledge and even a set of false number plates which had been fixed to a car used in a crime!

Sarah Barrett, Head of Customer and Community Services for Mears, said: "We are happy to support the Love Where You Live campaign. This initiative, supported by Tamworth Borough Council and its tenants, helps bring about a real sense of community spirit”.

Tamworth Borough Council Estates Manager Trevor Wylie said he was delighted by the success of the litter pick.

He said: “It was a well organised day which gave the tenants of Stonydelph the opportunity to take part in an exercise not only aimed at clearing away large bulky items and litter, but to raise the profile of the surrounding area and engage with staff from both the council and Mears, our new repairs contractor”.

“Issues also picked up on the day included repairs and environmental works. Mears staff commented on how well things went and how they had enjoyed getting out of the office, talking to the local tenants who we encountered along the way and working with both the tenant participation and caretaking teams.”
