Wear Valley company Dale & Valley Homes has launched a campaign to save thousands of tenants money on their energy bills.
The year-long campaign will target some of the most needy people in the area with advice on heating their homes more efficently.
Two specialist advisors have been taken on to show people the simple things they can do to save money such as switching energy suppliers, using their heating systems more efficently and minor changes in lifestyle which can use less energy.
Damian Pearson, business development co-ordinator for Dale & Valley Homes, said: “We will be starting with the elderly and most vulnerable customers and moving on from there.
“The energy advisors, Alyson Hodgson and Simon Lawes, will be writing to customers and arranging to visit them.
“We are very aware of rising fuel prices and the pressures our customers are facing and that fuel poverty is increasing. Our energy advisors are part of a pilot scheme, funded for one year by Dale & Valley Homes, North East Procurement’s future jobs fund, and British Gas.
“At the end of that year we are hoping we can show significant improvements for people.
“Letters will be going out to the first customers very soon and I would urge them to meet with the advisors and listen to what they have to say.”
