Severnside's 2012 Community Fayre
Almost 400 people joined Severnside Housing for a free fun day out on Saturday 09 June, at London Road Sports Centre.
This year’s annual Community Fayre was themed around the Olympics and the Jubilee and, as in previous years, was open to the whole community, not just Severnside tenants.
Some of the most popular activities on the day included zorbing, boxing, rock climbing, and archery, as well as an introduction to the Paralympic sport of boccia, also known as armchair bowls.
The ‘Jubilee Marquee’ was a big hit with older residents, where bingo and a Jubilee themed tea party were the order of the day. Younger visitors headed for the ‘Severnside 10th Birthday Marquee’ where there were more than 160 entries in the ‘decorate a cup cake’ competition, along with balloon modelling and a lucky dip.
There were also performances from the Chinese School of Telford’s Chinese Dragon, and Tropikal Vizions steel band, as well as cooking demonstrations from Radbrook Catering College.
In addition to the fun activities, there were interactive displays and information from a wide range of local agencies and partner organisations, including Shropshire Council, Shrewsbury College of Arts & Technology, Shropshire Primary Care Trust, Cycle Shrewsbury, Shropshire Amateur Boxing Club, Shropshire Housing Alliance, the British Heart Foundation and Shropshire Community Council.
Severnside’s Resident Senate, Resident Inspectors and ASTAR (the Active Severnside Tenants and Residents group) were there on the day to talk to other tenants and promote opportunities for getting more involved with Severnside.
Claire Poulson, Community Development Officer at Severnside Housing, said: “We had a great day on Saturday, and it was wonderful that so many people joined us and got into the spirit of the day. We’ve had excellent feedback, and will be using this to plan an even better event for nest year.”
“We’d also like to say a big thank you to all of our partners and local agencies that got involved and supported the day.”
