Richmond Housing Partnership (RHP) took part in celebrations for World Book Night this week. Aiming to get their young customers more interested in reading, the local housing association gave out free books to their youth club at the Hounslow Heath Community Centre, run by their Urban Academy, on Monday with the remainder going to their borough youth panel the following evening.
World Book Night was founded by Jamie Byng from Canongate Books in 2010 and was celebrated in the UK, Ireland, Germany and the US this year. 25 titles are chosen and the event enlists the help of nearly 20,000 ‘givers’ to distribute 1 million free copies to their local communities, including prisons, hospitals and youth clubs.
RHP ‘Giver’ Catherine Walsh says: “Reading can open so many doors for young people, and a good story can stay with you long after you turn the last page. The book I was chosen to give is a very gripping novel that I think our young customers will really enjoy and will want to pass on to their friends – and that’s part of the magic.”
All of the books reprinted for World Book Night feature recommendations for other books specially chosen by the authors. For more information on the event visit http://worldbooknight.org/
