Wherry Housing Association trainee, Jessica Ward has been named Apprentice of the Year by Great Yarmouth College.

Jessica, is apprentice to the Business Excellence Team, at Wherry’s offices at St. Andrews Business Park, Norwich.

She will receive her prestigious award at special presentation evening at Yarmouth College on Wednesday 8 February, which is during National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from 6 to 8 February.

Jessica, age 23, of Caister-on-Sea, Norfolk, who was placed with Wherry, part of Circle Housing, in arrangement with the college, said:” I’m really excited about Wednesday’s event and really proud of myself. I have been able to learn such a lot here.

“During my time at Wherry, my confidence has grown a huge amount. Since working here it has definitely opened my eyes to new career paths. I’ve really been able to develop my customer care and people skills here.

“I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship, it’s a great way to get experience alongside working towards a qualification.”

Jessica joined Wherry in May 2010 and her work here has had a big impact on the organisation. She has co-ordinated complaints for Wherry and during this time complaints handling performance significantly improved.

In addition, Jessica has worked with Wherry’s Customer Services team, as well as ‘shadowing’ roles in other service areas to gain a good understanding of the housing provider and how it is run.

Mark Jones, Managing Director of Wherry, said, “We’re all very proud of her. Jess is hardworking, eager to learn and a joy to work with and truly deserves this recognition. Well done Jess.”

Wherry currently has five other apprentices placed with them through arrangements with a variety of other partners, and have just accepted another one.

Sally said: “We believe in being closely involved with our community and that includes supporting and developing local skills and the economy.

“Apprentices placed with us are able to gain experience across the whole organisation during the two year duration of their placement.

“They might spend a month in a neighbourhood office, or in finance, or customer care. That way they get a good idea of the wide range of activities across the organisation.

“It can help apprentices to decide which direction they want their careers to develop. We are very happy to keep supporting the apprenticeship scheme.”
