A row of run-down shops in Leeds has been turned into new affordable housing.

Regenerated by social housing provider Yorkshire Housing, Leeds City Council, Aire Valley Homes and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the £3m scheme in Morley has created 22 environmentally friendly two-bedroomed apartments.

The scheme also benefits from photovoltaic (PV) solar panels and each apartment has thermal insulation and sound reducing matting to make them energy efficient and to reduce any potential noise transference between properties.

Ged Walsh, Business and Development Director at Yorkshire Housing, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to regenerate this site where much needed affordable housing is in high demand by the people who live local to the area. These properties are a wonderful example of how through partnership working, Yorkshire Housing is able to deliver modern and environmentally-friendly homes to the people who need them most.

“The new apartments are attractive and spacious, and just a stone’s throw from the town centre. The development has transformed the site and has helped rejuvenate this area of Morley."

Councillor Peter Guren, Leeds City Council executive board member with responsibility for housing, said: “It is excellent to see another development completed offering extra housing to people in the local area. We have worked closely with the HCA and Yorkshire Housing to develop the scheme and I am pleased to say a number of the properties are offered for social rent.

“This scheme makes a small but important contribution to our efforts to reduce housing waiting lists in Leeds. It offers high quality properties that will provide families with a secure, affordable home for the future.”
