Orbit chief executive Paul Tennant has been elected as the new Vice-President of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) following a ballot by its members.

Mr Tennant takes up his post immediately and will serve for the next twelve months, following which he will become CIH President. His appointment follows a candidacy campaign with Jan Taranczuk.

Only around 2,000 members participated in the vote, a turnout of less than 10% said Mr Taranczuk.

Paul Tenant, CIH Vice President, said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been elected by members as Vice President of CIH. I see engagement with members as absolutely critical as CIH continues to evolve it’s role and offer in a time of such huge challenge and opportunity.

"I look forward to supporting those conversations going forward. I would like to thank the many members who supported me, and also those who took the time to share their views. Finally, my thanks to Jan for stimulating such worthwhile debates during the election.”

Robin Lawler, CIH President, welcomed Paul: “I am thrilled that Paul is to become the next Vice President he will be a huge asset for CIH and the sector.

"I am a passionate advocate of the importance of using the collective knowledge and experience of our members to improve standards in housing and never has it been more important for housing professionals to get the support they need – I have no doubt that Paul will make a significant contribution. Many thanks to Jan, a worthy candidate, and of course congratulations to Paul.”

Mr Taranczuk offered his "congratulations and support" to the new Vice President.

"I offer my thanks to all those who took the trouble to vote for me," he said. "The prospect of the CIH being led by a Tennant will excite the headline writers and I offer Paul my full support in helping to promote the Institute, and making it more relevant to those working in the sector."

A poll conducted by 24dash on the election revealed that 63% of readers favoured Mr Taranczuk's candidacy.
