Nearly 100 new homes have been completed this month as part of the regeneration of the Heygate estate.

Southwark Council said the homes will help address the shortage of housing in Southwark as part of the council's Heygate rehousing programme.

Delivered by London and Quadrant Housing Association, in partnership with the council, a number of the flats will be offered to former Heygate residents who have priority over the affordable units and can also view the new homes ahead of other eligible people.

The programme consists of 10 housing schemes in total. Six have now completed including three this month – adding up to almost 100 new homes this year already.

Three more sites are currently under construction and a further one will be submitted for planning in June 2012 and completed by late 2014.

Councillor Fiona Colley, cabinet member for regeneration at Southwark Council, said: “This is a great start to the year and I'm delighted that three new schemes have seen completion this month, a sign of more to come.

"These homes will be bright and warm, with plenty of modern specifications, perfect for local families, and will go some way to addressing the chronic need for more good quality housing in this central London borough.”

Across the whole programme there will be an anticipated 600 new homes delivered of which 512 will be affordable. In total 70% of the programme will be social rented units, 15% intermediate, and 15% private.
