Kier North Tyneside is helping to reduce unemployment across the region by providing high quality training opportunities for people looking to start their careers. The unique training opportunities with Kier will provide youngsters with full-time positions where they will be developing skills including plumbing and plastering.

With the latest recruitment of four new apprentices to work alongside repairs and maintenance staff, Kier is fulfilling its commitment as a socially responsible employer to providing valuable opportunities for youngsters to gain vital on-the-job experience. These appointments follow the recent recruitment of six administrative apprentices making a total of ten new full-time placement students for Kier in North Tyneside.

The new starters, who are aged between 16 and 17 and all come from the local area, will work alongside dedicated mentors while carrying out NVQ qualifications with leading training provider JTL andNewcastleCollege.

Kier regional director for maintenance, Mike Furze, said: “It is vital for companies to invest in the future generation if we want to break the cycle of worklessness caused by increased competition for jobs and fewer training positions. At Kier, we strive to make a positive contribution to the communities in which we work and are always proud to be able to offer placement opportunities such as these to local young people.”

The apprentices will carry out a comprehensive induction covering subjects such as health & safety and customer care before starting their full-time roles.

North Tyneside Elected Mayor, Mrs Linda Arkley, said: "We are committed to improving opportunities for our young people to succeed in the workplace. Apprenticeships play a vital role in this, and it is excellent news that Kier has committed to taking this step.

“Hopefully other firms will follow Kier’s example, giving young people the chance to develop in an environment where their talents can be nurtured.”
